Christine Mackey - Seed Conversations and ‘other’ matters

In 2002, Christine Mackey graduated with an MA Time based and Performance Studies at Dartington College of Art, England and in 1992 with a BA in Sculpture from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland and in 2011 completed a practice based PhD at the University of Ulster, Belfast. Recent projects include: solo exhibition at The Butler Gallery, Kilkenny, 2011; 2010 The Galway Arts Centre, Galway; 2010 HUB/SchUB Mediations Biennale 2010, The Municipal Gallery, Poznan, Poland with: Agnieszka Chojnacka (PL), Ela Walters (PL), Wiktor Polak (PL), Mariusz Soltysik (PL)Dmitry Strakovsky (USA); 2010 selected for CCA:RDS, curated by Helen Carey (www.rds.ie).

This is a new project building on the Fort Dunree and Agricultural Show Artist Residency contexts that Artlink has been developing.

There will be a three month Fort Dunree Studio Residency in Summer 2012 and within that new works will be presented as public interventions within Fort Dunree; alongside an allied project presented at the 100th Inishowen Agricultural Show, Carndonagh.

The artist’s Fort Dunree Studio Residency will include several open studio and workshop days.

The project is an extension of an ongoing body of work, the artist’s Seed Matter project, an on-going social investigation between the micro/macro geographies of the ‘seed’ in an attempt to envision local ecological processes relative to global contexts. Fort Dunree as a remote rural site/studio, alongside an intervention at one of the local agricultural shows are the ideal settings in which to further this work within a site-specific residency model.

The project will expand from a series of public conversations concerning agricultural practices in Ireland and abroad around such issues as food sovereignty, seed production, trade and agricultural practices in a rural community, relative to national and international concerns with regards too environmental issues, climate change, land-use/resources and sustainability with conversations transcribed as live sound, as text, as drawings.
